Profiles in Service

One may expect to slow down a bit upon achieving senior status in life. However, that is not the case with octogenarian and Past District Governor Hal Dunkelberger. Seventeen years after Hal's retirement from Gettysburg College, including twenty years as chair of the religion department, Hal is still actively serving his community through not just participation, but leadership roles in a local AARP chapter and as a founding member of Senior ACTS, a local theatrical group. He has recently been involved in organizing bus trips for some of these groups as well. And, not incidentally, Hal is very active in masonic organizations and serves as a Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. As the Gettysburg Rotary Club's only District Governor (1972 -1973) Hal is, of course, a club "senior statesman", and he is called upon for advice and for formally orienting and inducting new members. What a role model of "Service Above Self"!

Talk about "giving back"! Brad Hoch has just returned from leading his seventh medical mission to Honduras! Brad is quite busy with his pediatric practice; active parenting with wife, Kay; researching and authoring materials in medicine and in history; and active participation in the local Torch club (past president), Lincoln Fellowship (past president), and, of course, Rotary (past president). Yet, he places the highest priority on "service above self" by ministering to the needs of those less fortunate. Medical Ministry International is dedicated to "...caring for the poor who otherwise have little or no access to medical care" and Brad is the Medical Director for the Honduran project. One of Brad's team members prepared a report on last year's visit and noted that the team had "...2604 adult clients, 1551 children. Vitamins were distributed to 2429 adults, 1335 children. The lab ran 401 tests, the physical therapists treated 325 cases. Total clinic patients was placed at 5543 for the mission. The dentists saw 1342 clients. They extracted 1763 teeth, installed 299 fillings, and cleaned teeth for 207 clients. And what about the veterinarian? He treated 185 beef cows, vaccinated 171 dogs, performed surgery on six goats, two horses, and three mules. Over 2,000 people were fed during the clinic hours." What a mission of service!!!

Meet Mr. Community Service!
A native of Nebraska and a WWII veteran, having served with the Royal Canadian Air Force (before the U.S. entered the war) and the U.S. Army Air Corps, Mike continued public service through a civilian career with the Department of Agriculture. There are many organizations in Gettysburg that are grateful that Mike and Marilyn chose to retire here. Among the beneficiary organizations is the Adams County Library where Mike may be seen laboring virtually daily, performing any odd job that needs to be done, no matter how large or small, in addition to serving as Vice President of the Library Board and chair of the Property Committee. He is also a mentor at the James Getty elementary school where he reads weekly to the students. For over seven years Mike has, weekly, been delivering bakery goods from Giant grocery store to the South Central Community Action Program's Food Pantry. And, in terms of Rotary support, Mike and Roger Williams prepare the room for the meeting each week. Finally, Mike regularly serves as a Meals-on-Wheels driver.
Way to go, Mike Humphrey!

What a tremendous amount of energy and what a contributor to the community! Carol Smith personifies the active involvement component of membership in organizations. As the club's Vice President/President-Elect, Carol is the focal point for membership development and she has developed innovative approaches to the recruitment of new members and, very importantly, the education, development, involvement, and recognition of members once on board. She is also a major force behind current fund-raising activities, co-chairing the new Harvest Ball; serves as the club's historian; and, not insignificantly, participates in every club service project, including Adopt-A-Highway pickups, Pancake Breakfast, Pasta Dinner, car parking for the fire department carnival, etc.. External activities include service on the Lutheran Theological Seminary Business Council; the Borough of Gettysburg's Zoning Board; Main Street Gettysburg's Board of Directors; Historic Gettysburg-Adams County; and the Gettysburg-Adams County Torch Club. In terms of volunteer activities, one may see Carol applying her certified Penn State Master Gardener skills in landscaping at the Adams County Library, working with the Biglerville Garden Club, and mentoring a Biglerville High School student in his project of soil conservation, landscaping, and composting. Carol serves as an inspiration to others in community service as she literally gets her fingers dirty in her extraordinarily active involvement!

Ms. Caroline ("Carol") S. Smith
Past President
